Morgans CUIN Vlog #2

Hey! Welcome to my 2nd Vlog!

For this vlog, I have decided to interview my sister who is a second-grade teacher and has been teaching for 6 years now! Although she is not currently an ESL teacher, I still decided to go ahead and ask her questions about which methods she would use in her classroom if she were to have ESL students in the future.
Each method has its unique strengths and can be effective in different contexts depending on the students' needs, ages, and learning goals. There are several approaches and methods that a teacher can use in the classroom to help students learn English and some of the methods Mallorie would use is that she would provide visual support for students and pre-teach vocabulary. Visual supports provide concrete, understandable cues to the language, helping to convey the message. I think that pre-teaching vocabulary is a good method because it helps ESL students by giving them a language foundation, they need to understand new content. I agree with Mallorie that it is important for students to build relationships with one another because it forms friendships and students can help each other out if one student does not understand something without feeling shy or embarrassed.     The effectiveness of each method depends on the context and the learners' needs. For example, communicative and task-based methods are great for fluency, which grammer-translation and the audio-lingual method are more suited for accuracy in writing and structure. I think the key is for the teacher to select the methods that he or she thinks would best suit their students' proficiency level, goals, and learning preferences.

Thanks for looking at my vlog!

  1. Hi Morgan!
I loved reading and watching your vlog. It makes me so happy to hear other people also have relatives who are teachers. Hearing about Mallorie's strategy for assisting ESL students was fascinating! Her focus on visual aids and vocabulary pre-teaching is excellent, both techniques offer important support that allows students to comfortably understand new material. I especially appreciate her focus on building connections amongst students, by creating a welcoming and supportive environment, fellow students may significantly influence language acquisition. You are entirely correct that different approaches are more effective based on the needs of the students, and that flexibility is essential. It's wonderful to see this much attention put into developing a successful and inclusive learning environment for ESL students!

  2. Hello Morgan! I loved your different point of view, by interviewing your sister and what she would do to support ELL. I found it really a great way to aid students through visual context. Overall setting that good and strong foundation to will help ELL students get on track to learning the English language. As well it was interesting that you mentioned the importance of each individual's proficiency levels that way teachers can know what is more suitable for their learning journey.
